The upcoming “bodyBody: You Can’t Tell by
Looking” is a multimedia event designed to generate discussion about the
cultural, media and familial messages women receive about their bodies.
This is the second year of the bodyBody project. Last year’s “bodyBody:
Aphrodite Raves” included a play written by producer Vanessa McGrady and
works by photographer Amanda Koster and filmmaker Kathlyn Albright to
create a multimedia presentation to glowing reviews. This year’s play,
“You Can’t Tell by Looking,” is a three-act dark comedy, also written by
McGrady, which explores family dynamics and the messages women get about
their body from their families. McGrady wants the audience to understand
how family, and especially the relationship a woman has with her father,
can be a source for negative and positive feelings about body
image.
This year’s multimedia format is similar to last year’s with
a photography exhibit that captures a range of women’s nude bodies and a
multicultural documentary featuring interviews from all over the
world.
The women behind the bodyBody project say they would like
their audience to expand their belief about what is
attractive.
“The thing I’m trying to focus on is beauty,” Koster
says. “This whole variety is beautiful. (The women photographed) all have
something they think is beautiful.” – Candice
